Welcome to
Cathy Chalmers Line Dancing!

Discover the exciting world of modern line dancing in Cochrane, Alberta! Line dancing involves moving your body to music in a set pattern of choreography. No partner required, no previous dance experience required, just a desire to get on the dance floor, meet new people, and have a great time. Line dancing has the additional benefits of strengthening muscles, improving cardio and burning calories while engaging your brain as you learn patterns of movement.

A lot of people think line dancing is just country music.  It's not!  Modern line dancing includes country, latin, pop, jazz, hip hop, rock, Irish, disco and even the occasional waltz. The result is a whole lotta fun!  Come dance with me and experience the joy of modern line dancing!

Teaching Schedule:

Tuesday Evenings. I rent the Seniors on the Bow auditorium in the SLS Centre. I teach 3 different levels of line dance: Absolute Beginner, Beginner, and Beyond Beginner. These classes are offered in a series and are progressive, offering a challenging but fun way to learn and advance your dancing. Classes are for all ages; however, children must be mature enough to handle the pace of the class and a guardian must be registered in the class with them.

Thursday Afternoons. These are drop in classes offered by Seniors on the Bow for anyone 50 or over.  The pace is slower, with more repetition. Please contact Seniors on the Bow for more details about these classes.

Did You Know...?

The benefits of line dancing go far beyond moving your body to music! There is scientific evidence that shows dancing has both physical benefits such as improved strength, posture, coordination and balance, as well as mental health benefits such as improved memory and  elevated mood. Additionally, dancing contributes to the brain's resilience to age-related changes like Alzheimer's.

Meet Cathy

Hi! In my LBLD (life before line dance) I was a high school teacher in Manitoba, teaching law, business and entrepreneurship.  Toward the end of my career I became the technology coordinator and a resource teacher for my school division.  My role as an educator has helped me to understand the needs of a wide variety of learners, has made me an expert at breaking complex information into bitesize pieces, and has fostered a deep sense of joy and satisfaction from helping others to experience success, attain goals, and feel self-assured.

When I retired and moved to Alberta in 2020, I bought a pair of cowboy boots, put on a medical mask and signed up for line dance lessons in Canmore. In May 2024, I started volunteer teaching line dancing at the Seniors on the Bow Centre in Cochrane, then in September of the same year started offering evening line dance classes.

These last two years have been a wild ride of boot stompin' fun. I've taught line dancing to hundreds and hundreds of people in classes and at events, and have fostered the development of a community of people who share the same passion as I do. It is gratifying to be a part of something where people find positivity, joy and friendship.  I look forward to seeing what the next year will bring!

Hope to see you on a dance floor soon!

Cathy is a wonderful instructor. I have line danced before with other instructors but Cathy surpasses them with her step by step instructions and words of encouragement

Marjorie

Cathy is a great line dance teacher. She knows how to explain and demonstrate the steps, and dances so that each person gets it. She has a lot of patience, as well as a good sense of humor. That last thing goes a long way. And the dance socials that Cathy hosts are so much fun! 💃💃💃
